•The mechanism of obesity inducing hyperuricemia is not fully understood.•Discordant monozygotic twin design is a powerful tool for methylation studies.•DNA methylation partially mediates association between BMI and serum uric acid.•This study provides clues to elucidate the pathogenesis of elevated serum uric acid.
