Wounded to death. Holistic, multimodal reconstruction of the dynamics in a case of multiple perimortem cranial injuries from a medieval site in northern Italy

•Paleotraumatology informs us about ancient human behavior and the spread of violence in the past.•A case of osteoarchaeological trauma benefits from the application of paleo-forensic methods.•Sharp-force lesions to the skull allow analyzing cut marks and tracing back the causative implement.•Three-dimensional microscopy allowed the morphometrical characterization of the lesions.•Micromorphological and micromorphometric analysis of cut marks revealed paramount in the reconstruction of the dynamics.
