•Subjective social status (SSS) captures the perceived position in social hierarchy.•National SSS represents one's perceived social standing in the national population.•Local SSS represents the perceived social standing in one's social environment.•Low local SSS was associated with attenuated nocturnal blood pressure dipping.•The association remained significant, after adjusting for objective social status.
