•Extended thromboprophylaxis (TP) was evaluated in discharge patients with COVID-19.•Extended TP can improve the prognosis of patients with COVID-19 at high risk of VTE.•TP doesn't increase the risk of major bleeding in patients at high risk of VTE.•Most included studies evaluated DOACs and prophylactic doses for extended TP.
