•A novel in-situ drainage water monitoring approach was tested.•Complex scaling processes were deciphered by four basic water quality parameters.•Bio-mediated iron ochre formation alternate with inorganic CaCO3 precipitation.•The observed coupled binary scaling system is primarily controlled by the discharge.
