Effects of community youth teams facilitating participatory adolescent groups, youth leadership activities and livelihood promotion to improve school attendance, dietary diversity and mental health among adolescent girls in rural eastern India (JIAH trial): A cluster-randomised controlled trial

•Large cluster RCT of a community-based, peer-facilitated group intervention to improve adolescent health in rural India.•No substantial effects found on girls' school attendance, dietary diversity, or mental health.•Intervention group more likely to use school-related entitlements including cash stipends, uniforms, books.•Adolescent boys had sustained engagement and comprised 40% of attendees at participatory groups.•Household poverty was a barrier to securing the resources and support necessary for positive changes in primary outcomes.
