•Fabricate high-quality activated carbon from local biomass: water hyacinth and eucalyptus char for methylene blue adsorption.•Fabricate nitrogen-doped activated carbon by ammonia treatment via gamma radiolysis without heat and toxic chemical.•Provide evidence that gamma radiolysis is comparable with the hydrothermal method for nitrogen-doped activated carbon.
