•The technologies and materials for chemical, biological or electrochemical oxidation of As(III) to As(V) were discussed.•The technologies and materials for As(V) removal after oxidation are systematically presented.•The advantages and disadvantages of techniques to oxidize and remove arsenic are discussed.•The ultrafiltration assisted by polymers and electrocoagulation are the most promising techniques to remove the oxidized As(V).
