Towards understanding of internal mechanism of coal reactivity enhancement after thermal decomposition at low temperature

•Room temperature oxidation of thermal decomposed coal was researched.•Effect of physical–chemical structures on self-heating of decomposed coal was studied.•Thermal decomposition of coal results in a large number of alkyl radical active sites.•Mechanism for easier self-heating of thermal decomposed coal was revealed.
