摘要
•The sulfate reduction rate of Vembanad estuary was nearly double that of Ashtamudi estuary.•Diversity of sulfate reducing bacteria was more in Ashtamudi than Vembanad.•Desulfovibrio was the common genera in both estuaries, with the predominant species being S. gigas in Ashtamudi.•Protein content of labile organic matter favoured the abundance of dsrB genes in the sediments.
