People-Flows: An Innovative Flow Monitoring and Management System in Urban Environments.

Overtourism is an ongoing problem observed in popular destinations around the world, requiring solutions that will combat congestion and enhance the quality of life for citizens and the quality of experience for visitors. In order to truly resolve the problem, solutions should combine the management of visitor flows through technological support, and also assist policymakers and management bodies in planning ahead. This work proposes a system for monitoring visitor flows and supporting their visit scheduling based on the estimated crowdedness of points of interest. The system comprises a web platform for a priori planning, as well as kiosks to issue tickets and informative screens in points of interest and central points of urban destinations. The proposed system is part of an integrated approach, also featuring a system for administrators of attractions (museums, sights, monuments, etc.) and policymakers.
