Characterization of eutectic mixtures of sugars and sugar-alcohols for cryopreservation

•NADES non-NADES were characterized by viscosity, density, DSC, water activity, and Raman across dilution.•Molar and excess volumes revealed NADES have as strong intermolecular bonding as glyceline.•Greatest excess volumes were in the water rich region.•Water activity of NADES is lower than non-NADES mixtures.•Raman cryomicroscopy revealed stronger hydrogen bonding for NADES.
