Generation of Hydrogen by the Hydrolysis of Mixtures of Magnesium Hydride with Citric Acid

A composite material based on magnesium hydride and citric acid is obtained by the method of mechanical milling in argon and used for hydrogen generation under laboratory conditions. Magnesium hydride is synthesized by the method of reactive milling of magnesium in a hydrogen atmosphere. The resulting composite material is characterized by a faster hydrogen release in the reaction of hydrolysis than pure MgH2. The reaction of hydrogen release from a MgH2 ⋅ 5 C6H8O7 sample is completed for 1 min and the released amount is equal to 300 mliter. We study the influence of the composition of the analyzed material on the rate and degree of the reaction of hydrolysis of MgH2 and determine the optimal composition for application in the devices used for hydrogen generation. The favorable influence of citric acid on the hydrolysis of magnesium hydride is analyzed.
