Abstract

•We aimed to summarize the definitions of fatal bleeding in venous thromboembolism (VTE) studies.•We conducted a scoping review of prospective studies assessing anticoagulation for VTE treatment.•Twenty percent of articles and 8% of studies reported a definition for fatal bleeding.•Case-fatality rates of major bleeding varied widely. A standardized definition of fatal bleeding is needed.
