Corrélation entre nombre de dents absentes et indices anthropométriques

L’association entre l’obésité et le nombre de dents absentes a été largement explorée en utilisant l’indice de masse corporelle (IMC), mais peu de travaux se sont intéressés à l’association entre différents indicateurs anthropométriques et le nombre de dents absentes en comparant les différentes catégories d’IMC. L’objectif principal du présent travail a été l’évaluation de la corrélation entre le nombre de dents absentes et différents indicateurs anthropométriques, et les changements de cette corrélation selon les catégories d’IMC définis par l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS). Une étude transversale a été réalisée dans un service de cardiologie de Rabat (Maroc) auprès d’une population d’adultes reçus en consultation ou hospitalisés. Les indicateurs anthropométriques, les comorbidités, ainsi qu’un examen oral pour dénombrer le nombre de dents absentes, ont été réalisés. Une corrélation a évalué l’association entre le nombre de dents absentes et le tour de taille, le tour de hanche, et les rapports tour de taille/tour de hanche et tour de taille/taille. Des corrélations positives et statistiquement significatives ont été observées entre le nombre de dents absentes et le tour de taille, le tour de hanche, et les rapports tour de taille/tour de hanche et tour de taille/taille. Lorsque la population étudiée a été considérée selon le statut pondéral, les corrélations positives et statistiquement significatives ont été observées entre l’IMC et le nombre de dents absentes chez les adultes en situation de maigreur (r = 0,54 ; p = 0,03), et entre le rapport tour de taille/tour de hanche chez les adultes de corpulence normale (r = 0,58 : p = 0,002). La corrélation entre le nombre de dents manquantes et le tour de taille, le tour de hanche, et les rapports tour de taille/tour de hanche et tour de taille/taille semble différer selon les catégories d’IMC. L’étude et la modélisation de l’association entre l’absence de dents et les indicateurs anthropométrique mérite d’être reconsidérée dans le futur pour mieux évaluer l’effet de l’absence dentaire sur chaque indicateur anthropométrique. The association between adiposity and missing teeth has mostly been studied using body mass index (BMI). However, a limited number of studies explored the association between obesity and with other anthropometric indices. The aim of the present study was to explore the correlation between the number of missing teeth and BMI, waist and hip circumference, waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios and, secondary, to evaluate these correlations considering within the WHO BMI categories. A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults attending a cardiology tertiary hospital unit in Rabat (Morocco). Anthropometric indices, comorbidities at time of inclusion and the number of missed teeth were recorded. Spearman coefficients were used to evaluate the associations between the number of missing teeth and BMI, waist and hip circumferences, waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios. A positive and statistically significant correlation was found between the number of missing teeth and with waist and hip circumference, and with waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios. Within BMI categories, positive and significant correlations were found between the number of missing teeth and BMI among lean adults (r = 0.54; P = 0.03) and between the number of missing teeth and waist-to-hip ratio among those with normal weight (r = 0.58; P = 0.002). The correlation between the number of missing teeth and waist and hip circumferences, and waist-to-hip and waist-to-height ratios seems to differ according to BMI categories. Modeling the association between the number of missing teeth and anthropometric indices in future studies should consider whether the number of missing teeth affect the anthropometric measure considered.
