•A dynamic model of a falling film water evaporator with recirculation is presented.•The evolution of wetted area is characterized via experimental tests.•The wettability factor is correlated to film Reynolds and Prandtl numbers.•The model can be integrated in the dynamic simulation of adsorption cycles.
