Surgeon-level versus hospital-level quality variance in kidney cancer surgery

•Variability in kidney cancer surgical quality of care exists at the surgeon- and hospital-level.•The quality indicator with the greatest amount of variance at the surgeon-level was the proportion of minimimally invasive surgical cases.•At the hospital-level, the proportion of partial nephrectomies performed for T1 masses had the most variance.•Understanding where variance exists on each quality indicators, allows for more targeted and efficient quality improvement initiatives to be developed.
