•The expression of LAG-3 on CD8 + T cells was elevated in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis.•The elevate of LAG-3 on CD8 + T cells was associated with severity of Tuberculosis.•Increased LAG-3 results in decreased activation, proliferation, secretion, and killing of CD8 + T cells.
