Genetic Algorithm Based SPV System with Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter

Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is higher in conventional inverters, as are switching losses and efficiency. As a result, multilevel inverters have evolved to address these issues, and they are now widely employed in power applications and renewable energy systems. These inverters create a smooth sinusoidal waveform at the load by using sinusoidal PWM to reduce switching losses and THD while retaining efficiency. In this paper, a cascaded H-bridge 5-level inverter and a solar PV array system are used. The solar PV panels are coupled with a GA-based MPPT controller, which tracks the maximum power points and THD is improved by the use of multilevel inverter (MLI) circuits, resulting in a better output waveform. During simulation using MATLAB/Simulink, the proposed system records THD values, which are 25.82% and 21.62% without and with GA-based MPPT, respectively.
