•The relationship between the atomic structure and electrochemical behavior of metallic glass is unveiled.•High temperature annealing reduces the corrosion resistance by inducing partial crystallization.•Cryogenic cycling of metallic glass deteriorates the corrosion resistance by increasing the structural heterogeneity.•Cryogenic holding for an extended time improves the corrosion resistance.
