•The thermal conductivity and viscosity of Au/Cu-Ar nanofluids were investigated.•The influences could be observed from the 3D smoothed surface plots visually.•The microstructures of nanofluids were explored by the number density study method.•Interfacial nanolayers impacted by nanoparticles of different shapes positively affect the thermal conductivity.
