According to a 2018 National Health Interview Survey from the United States, 31.8% of women aged 50 years or older have had a hysterectomy (1). The question of removing ovaries at the time of benign hysterectomy to prevent ovarian cancer in low-risk women has been widely debated. Incidence rates of unilateral and bilateral oophorectomy have varied over time, partly because of this debate.
