Smart contact lens with transparent MXene decoration for ocular photothermal therapy and eye protection

A smart contact lens platform for ocular thermal therapy and eye protection is desirable for treating or alleviating ocular disease while reducing risk of laser injury, dehydration, and bacterial infec-tion. Herein, we report a wearable, transparent, multifunctional contact lens platform for ocular photothermal therapy and eye pro-tection, realized by simply spray-decorating a Ti3C2Tx MXene layer on a commercial contact lens. The obtained transparent MXene-decorated contact lens (M-contact lens) provides excellent in vitro and in vivo photothermal conversion efficiency, effectively improving the vascular blood flow in the ocular anterior segment. The M-contact lens also exhibits notable laser protection perfor-mance and superior moisturizing capability and antibacterial activity. Notably, the M-contact lens has good biosafety for eyes, ensuring its safety during practical applications. The smart M-contact lens is highly promising in adjuvant therapy for ocular superficial disease and for ocular protection from lasers, dehydra-tion, and bacteria.
