•Ni/CeO2-La2O3 exhibits a strong acidity according to TPD of NH3.•The strong acidity of Ni/CeO2-La2O3 facilitates the catalytic methylation of phenol.•Phenol was completely converted with methanol to 2,6-xylenol over Ni/CeO2-La2O3.
