Reaching net-zero in the chemical industry—A study of roadmaps for industrial decarbonisation

•The European chemical industry does not yet have a strong and shared vision for pathways to net-zero emissions.•Roadmaps mostly focus on supply-side options, such as switching to recycled plastics feedstock, biomass or captured CO2, as well as changing energy sources and using CCS.•Options to reduce demand, through for example material efficiency and substitution, or avoiding certain uses, are less explored.•The need for policymakers to create enabling conditions for decarbonisation is underlined, whereas the responsibility of the chemical industry goes rather unnoticed.
