•Mashed and fried potato intake was associated with a higher risk of T2D.•Genetic risk score was associated with higher risk of T2D.•Potato intake was positively associated with T2D risk regardless of genetic risk.•Replacing potatoes with equivalent vegetables was associated with lower T2D risk.
