•Thermal performance of two shapes of W/Cu monoblock was assessed numerically.•PIC model is used for steady state heat fluxes to divertor tile.•Cu/CuCrZr materials under steady state were sensitive to cooling water condition.•The tile surface in the baffle region would melt under ITER-like VDE heat fluxes.
