•Prepared a morphology and shape controlled AgNPs/α–MnO2NRs catalysts.•Ag NPs with MnO2 nanorods interface created higher oxygen vacancies.•AgNPs/α–MnO2NRs had strong metal support interactions.•Introduction of Ag NPs over MnO2 enhanced the BnOH adsorption rate.•Over 1 wt% AgNPs/ α–MnO2NRs shown higher activity than bare MnO2.
