Rationale: Optimal feeding in patients recovering from sepsis is critical to preserve muscle mass. Previously, we showed β-Hydroxy β-methylbutyric acid (HMB) supplementation reduced whole body protein breakdown in the early recovery phase of sepsis in the pig. Unclear is if this was related to less breakdown of muscle tissue. Therefore, we studied the preservation of muscle by measuring the fractional protein synthesis rate and breakdown rate (FSR/FBR) of muscle. Secondly, 11 other metabolic active organs were tested.
