•In-situ grown SiC whiskers are detected in gold tailings geopolymer composite coatings.•Embedded SiC whiskers-bonded amorphous silicate enhances flame retardancy of coatings.•SiC whiskers make Eα rise from 74.90 to 85.82 kJ·mol−1 at 674 °C∼890 °C by Z.-L.-T. model.
