Fracture failure analysis of flywheel hub served in heavy-fuel aviation piston engine

•Severe service load and design flaws in flywheel hub lead to fracture failure of flywheel hub.•Stress and fatigue lifetime analysis based on FEA simulation to confirm the failure mechanism.•Precautionary measures for future flywheel hub failures are proposed based on the failure mechanism derived in this study.
