•A real fusel oil stream is valorized into H2 by electrochemical reforming.•Fusel oil/acetic acid/water ratio was optimized to improve activity and stability.•Promising current densities were reached at 1.2–1.4 V with low energy requirements.•Stability was proved after several 1.2 V cycles with open circuit potential steps.•Formation of carboxylic acids was observed at 1.2 V in the anode outlet.
