Enhanced EBSD calibration accuracy based on gradients of diffraction patterns

•An integrated full pattern match method on the gradients of electron diffraction pattern is proposed.•The method enhances the calibration accuracy as it accommodates the excess-deficiency effect.•The calibration accuracy reaches 2 × 10−3 as compared with shadow-casting methods.•A new transformation reveals the average band profile of EBSD patterns.
