•New technique to fabricate temporary long period gratings (LPGs) mechanically induced by applying a pressure to an optical fiber enclosed in a particular holder;•Low-cost 3-D printed polymeric holder fabrication including grating structure to induce periodic modulation in the optical fiber;•Extensive investigation of the optical properties of the fabricated devices with respect to the design parameters.
