•Dopping Mn2+ reduced defect states of (DETA)PbBr5·H2O, improving photoluminescence intensity.•PLQY of (DETA)Pb0.2Mn0.8Br5·H2O was enhanced from 1.81% to 20.96%.•A correlation between steric hindrance of ammonium cation and photophysical properties is shown.
