On the identification of most appropriate green roof types for urbanized cities using multi-tier decision analysis: A case study of Istanbul, Turkey

•The binary prioritization of the extensive and intensive green roofs was performed.•The green roof types were assessed based on 4 dimension each contains 4-sub-criteria.•The adopted MCDM framework contains fuzzy AHP and TOPSIS implementations.•The financial and environmental aspects are critical in evaluating the green roofs.•Extensive green roof was found as the optimal configuration for the city of Istanbul.
