Real-time monitoring of driver distraction: State-of-the-art and future insights

•Driver distraction and inattention have been found to be major contributors to a large number of serious road crashes.•Review and assess the state-of-the-art systems and platforms measuring driver distraction or inattention.•A systematic review followed the PRISMA guidelines was used.•Eye tracking systems and cameras were the most frequent devices to detect driver distraction.•Less frequent and effective approaches included electrodes, hand magnetic rings and glasses.
