Allergic contact dermatitis to acrylates in long-lasting nail products

Nowadays gel, acrylic and hybrid manicure is becoming more and more popular. Therefore increased number of allergic contact dermatitis caused by acrylates from long-lasting manicure products can be observed. Most often positive reactions occur with 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). Typical skin lesions are oedema, reddening and fissures of the fingertips and nails dystrophy. Diagnosis is established according to the clinical manifestation and results of patch tests. Most efficient method of treatment is to avoid the causing factor. Glucocorticoids, emollients and alternative methods are also applied. It is also important to discuss Occupational Allergic Contact Dermatitis caused by acrylates in long-lasting nail products and the procedures and preventive measures in the workplace.
