•EMPs revealed Listeria contamination in three food production facilities.•Contamination by the Listeria serotype was observed in each facility.•EMPs permitted the use of remedial measures.•Sliced salami and pastrami were contaminated with L. monocytogenes from the slicer.•Swabbing with neutralizing buffer recovers Listeria better than saline swabs.
