•O2 had a negligible effect on heel buildup on zeolite even at 250 °C.•Higher desorption temperature in presence O2 reduces activated carbon’s surface area.•O2 presence during thermal desorption of activated carbon forms a range of organic species.•By-products of thermal oxidation of VOCs in activated carbon were identified with GCMS.
