•TFN membranes were constructed and compared by doping MoS2 in either PA layer or interlayer.•TFN membranes presented more outstanding performance than traditional TFC membrane.•I-TFN membrane with MoS2 interlayer exhibited excellent permeability.•P-TFN membrane possessed superior separation ability and anti-fouling property.•Modified TFN membranes showed superior properties in actual brackish water treatment.
