Background and Aims: Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) show immense plasticity. In atherosclerosis, they can switch from contractile to modulated plaque cells with different phenotypes. We aimed to develop a transgenic mouse model for noninvasive monitoring of smooth muscle cell populations and their progeny during atherogenesis.
