Establishing the measurement precision of the patient health questionnaire in an adolescent sample

•Items measuring anhedonia and psychomotor disturbances performed relatively poorly.•Somatic items (appetite and sleep) may be more useful if using dichotomous responses.•Students with different gender and income levels responded to some items differently.
