Hepatoprotective effects of natural drugs: Current trends, scope, relevance and future perspectives

•The present review highlights the potential of natural products as hepatoprotective agents.•Drugs-induced liver injury (DILI) has been discussed, and the role of phytochemicals in ameliorating liver injury has been summarised.•The review covers the role of plant secondary metabolites, probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and synbiotics in hepatoprotection.•Mechanistic insights into flavonoid-mediated hepatoprotection are also discussed.•This review aims to provide a systematically organized, state-of-the-art understanding of the role of phytochemicals in hepatoprotection.
