Bisphenols and phthalates in Australian wastewater: A statistical approach for estimating contributions from diffuse and point sources

•Two bisphenols and nine phthalates were quantified in 22 Australian STPs.•Q1 mean + (10 x STDV) was selected as background (diffuse) release.•BPA, BPS, DiNP and DMP were classified as point-source dominant chemicals.•∼4.2 tonnes/year of bisphenols ∼47 tonnes/year of phthalates from diffuse sources.•∼4.5 tonnes/year of bisphenols ∼5.9 tonnes/year of phthalates from point sources.
