Synthesis of hybrid membrane distillation processes with optimal structures for ethanol dehydration

•A synthesis problem for separating ethanol-water mixtures using hybrid membrane distillation process structures was proposed.•A low aggregation superstructure was adopted in the synthesis problem.•The proposed process structures were superior in terms of utility cost and Total Annual cost savings compared with the pressure swing an extractive distillation processes.
