Tailored hybrid Ce-Zr-La hydrous oxide material: Preparation, characterization and application towards removal of fluoride and copper(II) from their contaminated water

•Synthesis of CeIV-ZrIV-LaIII hybrid oxide (CZL) and characterizations.•Systematic F− and Cu(II) extraction from water with CZL.•Best fit pseudo-second-order kinetic model, implying the chemisorption mechanism.•High amounts of F− and Cu(II) extraction at optimized conditions were reported to be 213.99 and 61.52 mg g−1, respectively.•Combined coulombic and ion-exchange phenomena are the extraction mechanisms.
