Intestinal Pgc1α ablation protects from liver steatosis and fibrosis

•Metabolic liver diseases may be caused by altered gut–liver crosstalk.•Cholesterol represents a deleterious lipotoxic species, involved in steatohepatitis.•Pgc1α controls intestinal cholesterol uptake by regulating the expression of the cholesterol transporter Npc1l1.•Intestinal Pgc1α deletion protects the liver from lipid accumulation, inflammation, and fibrosis.
