Probing the photoionization of liquid water with broadband terahertz

The photolysis of liquid water is fundamental in many physical, chemical, and biological processes. We performed pump-probe experiments with ionizing optical pump pulses at 400 nm, while probing the photo-induced changes with broadband terahertz (THz) radiation (1-7 THz). We found three distinct transient signals in the THz range: a fast (< 200 fs) and broadband response associated to the delocalized photo-generated electrons; a slow response (similar to 150 ps) at low frequency (<2 THz) associated to the rearrangement of the water network subsequent to charge-separation; and a long-lasting signature (>250 ps) centered at 3 THz that reveals the hydration of the localized, solvated electrons.
