•Pt-Pt coordination numbers (CN) in NiPt were regulated via Pt precursor control.•A volcano relationship between Pt-Pt CN and H2 formation rate was established.•Pt-Pt CN around 2 remarkably promoted CHx and O/OH species formation.•Pt-Pt CN around 2 lowered the activation energy of CHx species oxidation.
